Who is Mastering You?
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money” (Matthew 6:24, NIV).
“Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?” (Matthew 16:24-26, ESV)
How can we tell what is mastering us? If we are following after Jesus Christ and doing what Scripture says, then He is our master. But if we are saying we accepted Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, but are still living according to our fleshly desires, we are liars and the truth is not in us.
A simple way to tell what is mastering us is to use these questions as filters:
1. Do our actions align with the Bible?
2. Do we have peace in our spirit about this action?
3. Does our action align with the character of God?
4. Who will get the glory by this action?
If we run all of our actions, behaviors, and even our thoughts through these filter questions, we will know who or what masters us. Jesus did not come to condemn us, but to give us an abundant life. “…I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10, KJV). He wants us to enjoy this life as we walk in obedience to Him so we can live eternally with Him.
