Desperate for God

“The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination and intention, all human thinking was only evil continually. And the Lord regretted that he had made man on earth, and He was grieved at heart.” (Genesis 6:5-6)

It’s about 4:00 a.m. I am up and my heart is desperate for God. The song Let It Rain is playing in the background. I started reading Genesis 6 about the story of Noah when my eyes landed on verse 5-6, “The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination and intention, all human thinking was only evil continually. And the Lord regretted that he had made man on earth, and He was grieved at heart.”

I read down through verse 8-9 where it says, “Noah found grace (favor) in the eyes of the Lord. Noah was a just man and perfect in his generation, and Noah walked with God.” Then for some reason the song in the background became louder and I heard these words: “What we have is not working and what we are doing is not changing anything.” I paused the song and meditated on those words, “What we have is not working. What we are doing is not changing anything.” What are we doing? In the USA we have greater access to the word of God than probably any other time in our history.

I remember a woman used to say to me, “You cannot continue to do the same thing and expect different results.” Noah was doing something that brought change. He was doing something that made God take notice of his heart. I wanted to dig further in the scripture when the Holy Spirit reminded me of Joshua 1:8. It says, “This book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth, but thou shall meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shall have good success.”

Did you know that at the time Noah walked with God the Bible was not even written? Noah’s family was from Adam and Eve’s third son, Seth. Noah’s great-grandfather was Enoch who the Bible says “...walked with God [in habitual fellowship]: and he was not [found among men], for God took him [home with Him]” (Genesis 5:22-24). Even though generations had passed before Noah was born we know he heard about his great-grandfather because he did as Enoch did; he walked with God.

Father, My heart is so heavy for our nation…I don’t even know the words to pray. Many people are just like those in the days of Noah, so blinded by the cares of this world and missing You. You shut us in our homes and removed all the distractions and yet, many still cannot see or hear you. Praise you God that Your word says, “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God” (Romans 8:26-27, ESV). In Jesus' name we pray and say thank you. Amen.
