Prayer of the Week

November 4

Today’s prayer is a prayer of thanks, taken from Psalm 136. I woke up one morning and God had this song in my head, “O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good.” I typed those words into my computer and Psalm 136 came up. The more I read the psalm, the more overjoyed my soul became!

There was a part of the scripture that I needed clarity. It spoke about God slaying the famous kings Sihon, king of the Amorites and Og, King of Bashan. In my study I found that Sihon king of the Amorites was very powerful and had taken the land from the Moabites. Remember the Moabites came from the lineage of Abraham’s nephew, Lot. This king had come and literally taken everything away from the Moabites. When Moses and the Israelites were on their way to the promise land they asked the King Sihon if they could pass peacefully through their land. King Sihon said no and came out with all of his army to defeat the Israelites. But God gave victory to the Israelites. This battle was so victorious that it was heard about in Jericho. Remember Rehab told the spies how the hearts of those in their city melted in fear of the Israelites when they heard about the victory of king of Sihon and king Og? Joshua 2:8-11 God gave the Israelites the same victory over the powerful king Og of Bashan! Look at how our God takes care of his own! Oh give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good!

O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever. To him who alone doeth great wonders: for his mercy endureth for ever. To him that by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endureth for ever. To him that stretched out the earth above the waters: for his mercy endureth for ever. To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever: The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever: The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him that smote Egypt in their firstborn: for his mercy endureth for ever: And brought out Israel from among them: for his mercy endureth for ever: With a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm: for his mercy endureth for ever. To him which divided the Red sea into parts: for his mercy endureth for ever: And made Israel to pass through the midst of it: for his mercy endureth for ever: But overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red sea: for his mercy endureth for ever. To him which led his people through the wilderness: for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him which smote great kings: for his mercy endureth for ever: And slew famous kings: for his mercy endureth for ever: Sihon king of the Amorites: for his mercy endureth for ever: And Og the king of Bashan: for his mercy endureth for ever: And gave their land for an heritage: for his mercy endureth for ever: Even an heritage unto Israel his servant: for his mercy endureth for ever. Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endureth for ever: And hath redeemed us from our enemies: for his mercy endureth for ever. Who giveth food to all flesh: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth for ever. Psalm 136
