Life-Giving Spirit

"So then, brothers and sisters, we are not obligated to the flesh to live according to the flesh, because if you are living according to the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live." —Romans 8:12-13, CSB

In the above passage, the Apostle Paul was writing to the believers in Rome, explaining the life-giving Spirit. In essence, he was saying that when you give your life to Christ, the body is dead because of sin, but your spirit is alive because Christ lives in you.

I once fell asleep while listening to scriptures from the book of Acts. When I woke up, the reading had moved to Romans 8. As I listened to this chapter, I couldn’t help but feel that there is no way for us as believers to walk in righteousness without meditating on the Word of God.

Our position, once we accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, is no longer that of a sinner but of righteousness. However, at the same time, we battle the desires of our flesh, which constantly seek their own way. I thank God for the Holy Spirit, who guides and prompts us to live righteously. There have been times when I’ve heard the Holy Spirit tell me not to say something, yet somehow the words still fell out of my mouth (lol). Of course, I was then left to deal with the consequences of what I had said.

The more we meditate on the Word of God, the less likely we are to allow our flesh to control us. Meditating on the Word empowers us to put to death the deeds of the body and to obey Christ.

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your amazing love. Thank You for giving us new life. Thank You for the Spirit of God, who helps us put to death our sinful deeds and guides us to live in righteousness with You. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
